ABOUT HEATHER KINAHAN
I am very fortunate to spend my days imagining, exploring and creating art! I discovered my love for mixing paint and applying it to canvas when after years of watching my daughter enjoy attending weekly art classes, I decided to take an intuitive painting class. I was hooked after the first lesson! I had been enjoying the role of teaching young children with diverse learning needs, but now wanted to explore this new passion. I began making it a priority to take lessons from various artists and to carve out time to paint. I believe this self-directed training, learning and practice created the depth of techniques that I weave into my work today. Through these efforts I was offered opportunities to showcase my art, create commissioned pieces and enter the art community, which confirmed that I truly could make a new career choice and live life as an artist. I have not looked back!
My artwork is inspired by nature’s landscapes and my love of colour, light and texture. Born and raised in Alberta, many of my paintings reflect the familiar landscapes I’ve grown up admiring. I have always observed how light accents the sky and continually changes the landscape around me. With our human brains processing vast amounts of information at incredible speeds, my hope is that my work allows the viewer more time to stop, pause and reflect on these beautiful moments around us in nature.
I am an acrylic artist. I love painting with bright colours and experimenting with different painting strokes. I often experiment with texture and enjoy sculpting with various mediums on the canvas to create interest and a unique experience with the subject I have painted.
Living in Calgary, Alberta provides me with endless inspiration as I travel across the prairies and into the foothills and mountains on a regular basis. I continue to attend my weekly art class as I love to learn and work alongside other creative people. It’s my favourite time every single week. It is my personal mantra to keep having new experiences. As I reflect, I am grateful for the way my first painting lesson sparked new possibilities for me and led to this wonderful, creative journey I am now enjoying.
